CONSUMER DAY - MONKMART

 CONSUMER DAY - MONKMART

The day that highlights the rights and power of a consumer and customer, is Consumer Day. The day was created to raise consumer awareness.

Every year on March 15th, the consumer movement observes World Consumer Rights Day to raise global awareness about consumer rights and needs. Celebrating the day is an opportunity to demand that all consumers' rights be respected and protected, as well as to protest market abuses and social injustices that undermine those rights.

President John F. Kennedy inspired World Consumer Rights Day by sending a special message to the US Congress on March 15, 1962, in which he formally addressed the issue of consumer rights. He was the world's first leader to do so. The consumer movement commemorated that date for the first time in 1983, and it is now used every year to mobilize action on important issues and campaigns.

What exactly is a consumer? A consumer is any single person or group of people, other than the buyer, who buys the product or services and consumes them without the buyer's permission. In layman's terms, the consumer is the person who uses the goods or services.

Every year, Consumers Rights Day is observed to protect consumers' rights and to ensure that consumers are not subjected to market abuse or social injustice that may jeopardize their rights.

"Customers are the most important visitor on our premises, they are not dependent on us, we are dependent on them. They are not an interruption in our work. They are the purpose of it. They are not outsiders in our business. They are part of it; we are not doing them a favor by serving them. They are doing us a favor by allowing us to do so."

-Mahatma Gandhi

"We see our customers as guests to a party, and we are the hosts, it's our job every day to make every important aspect of the customer experience a little bit better." -Jeff Bezos

This day was created to protect consumer rights and raise public awareness about them. This is one of the steps taken by the government to control market exploitation.

On the one hand, every great salesman or businessman believes that there is no greater asset than a satisfied customer, and on the other hand, almost every salesman abuses the consumer's right to profit.

It is difficult to protect consumers' rights because there is a new scam and new technique to exploit every day, but people must be aware of it, which highlights the significance of this day.

This day allows individuals to emphasize the importance of the consumer movement and the need to make all consumers more aware of their rights and responsibilities.

The Consumer Protection Act 2019 goes into effect on July 20, 2020.

Through its various notified Rules and provisions, such as Consumer Protection Councils, Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions, Mediation, Product Liability, and punishment for the manufacture or sale of products containing adulterant / spurious goods, the Act will empower consumers and assist them in protecting their rights.

The Act includes the creation of the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) to promote, protect, and enforce consumer rights. The CCPA will have the authority to conduct investigations into violations of consumer rights and file complaints/prosecutions, order the recall of unsafe goods and services, order the cessation of unfair trade practices and misleading advertisements, and impose penalties on manufacturers/endorsers/publishers of misleading advertisements.

The Consumer Protection Act aims to protect consumers from various forms of exploitation, such as defective goods, deficiencies in services, and unfair trade practices.

Important Goals

1. To promote and protect consumer rights, such as the right to be protected against the marketing of goods and services that endanger life and property.

  • Be informed about the quality, quantity, potency, purity, standard, and price of goods or services, as applicable, to protect the consumer from unfair trade practices

  • Have access to a wide range of goods and services at reasonable prices wherever possible.

  • Be heard, and have confidence that the consumer's interests will be taken into account in appropriate forums.

  • Seek redress for unfair trade practices, restrictive trade practices, or consumer exploitation.

  • A nod to consumer education

  1.  Quasi-judicial machinery is sought to be established at the district, state, and central levels to provide consumers with prompt and simple redress.

Consumers have the right to shield products and services that endanger their lives and property from marketing cost cuts. The customer has the right to obtain information on the quantity, consistency, purity, strength, and quality of products and services.
