NATIONAL CLEANLINESS DAY - Monkmart

 -ANANDAN R

In India, Cleanliness day, January 30 is considered as Cleanliness Day as an effort of commemorating Gandhi's death memorial.

Why Gandhi? he was the face of the Indian freedom fight against the imperial British forces. He based his principles and teaching on the pillars of the importance of cleanliness to be followed all over the country and followed the ahimsa. He realized the importance of cleanliness and made it to be reflected in his teachings.

We have an old saying in Tamil which goes like, சுத்தம் சோறு போடும். which translates to cleanliness never fails to feed. This is the level of importance we had for cleanliness, from the olden days.

We celebrate the cleanliness year after year, with preaching and pledges taken and to be forgotten in the instant that it is taken.  This indicates the existing distinction between the practice and preaching that we as a people follow and leave for future generations.

Often, we could find that our house is being properly cleaned and necessary actions are made in order to maintain that. Isn’t the country our first home?

One could answer the above question as, we have sanitary workers appointed and it is their job to do so. If you are one of them, you are utterly wrong and I would request you to read the blog till the end.

A day in the life of a sanitation worker - The Hindu

Of course, it is their job to do so. But where is our sense of responsibility? Let us consider a public restroom. We are asked to utilize the public properties with care, and leave it better than it was before. Even if we are not responsible for a bad state of it how it is left, didn’t one of us do it in the first place? This is the kind of sense of responsibility that should knock our heart saying it is the collective byproduct of the people’s money, and no other individual should experience the bad feel as we did.

The grand dream of hygienic and proper working public properties is a collective dream and desire to be achieved and not just on individuals reform and in the hands of sanitary workers

I would  remind you of one of the popular proverb which you must have probably heard

“Cleanliness is next to Godliness”

Through the above proverb it is understood how much value Cleanliness needs to be given in our life.

Cleanliness leaves us with many fruits to pick on. Such as a hygienic atmosphere, more space for utilization, a disease-free society, effective utilization of resources, and the gift of a better world for the future generation than what was inherited by us.

Cleanliness begins with ours at the first place, as there is an infamous truth that, “the outside conditions are just a reflection of our inner self, and vice versa”. Surroundings become clean, and when we become clean we think of becoming clean in our actions and be responsible for the results that its going to leave.

This thought, when practiced by an individual keeps his room and his house. When practiced by everyone, gifts us an opportunity to see the beauties of the world and in its people.

Clean mind

Cleanliness in the outer atmosphere is not the only thing to be considered. Even our mind and our heart is to be cleaned from all negative thoughts, attitude because it can only lead to inner peace and easy living. Meditating is one of the best ways to mind declutter. As meditation could make us occupied which doesn’t allow any evil thoughts to enter and makes us master the art of living. Meditating means focusing on any particular activity (mindfulness), and so meditation doesn’t only mean any physical or breathing exercise. While reading, our concentration gets focused on understanding the contents which is also a type of meditation. Reading good books could be considered as one of the best ways to clear all trash from within us and lead a peaceful life.
